The 50.38-km broad gauge line from Bairabi in Kolasib district to Sairang, 20 km from Aizawl, is part of the railway's project to connect the capitals of the northeastern states. Hilly terrain, covered with dense forest, the railway route here has to traverse through a number of deep gorges and over several rivers flowing at low ground levels. While the high mountains are penetrated by constructing tunnels, the deep river gorges between the mountain ridges are connected by tall bridges.

The Bairabi Sairang Railway is a railway line from Bairabi station to Sairang. It is a part of Northeast Frontier Railway zone of Indian Railways. The Bairabi-Sairang rail link will require construction of 204 bridges, 24 tunnels and four stations.
In August 2015, Indian Railway completed a survey for a possible new route extension from Sairang to Hmawngbuchhuah on Mizoram’s southern tip on the border of Myanmar where at nearby Zochachhuah 'Kaladan Multi-Modal Transit Transport Project (KMMTTP) road enters Myanmar. Indian Railway has already converted the current 84 km rail line from Katakhal (Assam) to Bairabi 2 km inside Mizoram.

Passenger services started on this line on 27 May 2016 by formal inauguration of Silchar Bairabi Passenger Train service. Its further 51.38 km Bairabi Sairang Railway extension from Bairabi to Sairang (20 km north of Aizwal) in Mizoram is under construction, with target completion date of March 2019 as per status update in March 2016.
Bairabi-Sairang Railway that would connect Aizwal to the railway network or the Jiribam-Imphal line. Mizoram-Assam border town Bairabi is the lone railhead linking Mizoram with the rest of the country by Railways. M/S BPC Consultant India Pvt. Ltd. has been entrusted by N.F Railway, Silchar to conduct plate load test and geo-technical investigation at minor bridges location to find out bearing capacity of soil in connection with construction of New BG Railway line from Bairabi to Sairang. Bairabi-Sairang Railway that would connect Aizwal to the railway network or the Jiribam-Imphal line would ensure railway connectivity to these respective state capitals before the end of the decade.
Conducting DGPS Survey/Total Station Survey and Geotechnical Investigation from Bhairabi to Sairang (almost 51 Kms). DGPS and Total station survey was carried out as a part of topographical survey along the the entire project stretch.
The work involved study and evaluate the stratigraphy of the said project locations and to obtain Geotechnical parameters of the subsurface formations for design and construction of foundation for the proposed minor bridges location.
Construction in this region already started in scattered manner, as a result of which the company had to face several challenges during redesigning the new alignment without demolishing the portions (especially the bridges) already constructed.
