East Central Railway has made further progress on the Jhanjharpur-Laukha Bazar gauge conversion in Bihar’s Kosi region. This will re-establish the rail link connecting Darbhanga to Forbesganj, Saharsa, and Purnia via the shortest rail route after eight decades.

The 31-km long gauge conversion area is slightly highland as against low lands all around. Numerous rivers flow in from Nepal and some of them cross the area. The main railway bridge over the river Kosi destroyed in 1936 floods is also likely to be reconstructed under this project.
The main objective of the project is to submit the Detail Project Report Including reviewing of Detail Soil Investigation Report, Hydrological report, Alignment, Preparation of Detail Design of Bridges of Any Alternative Alignment under the Railway corridor.

The tasks performed during the project work are as follows
- Review of Hydrological Analysis.
- Checking of Geotechnical reports abutments, piers, retaining walls.
- Bridge inventory and condition assessment.
- Preparation of General Arrangement drawings, making the span arrangement schemes.
- Detailed design Rail bridges, with RDSO standard type superstructures, counterforts, cantilever, spill-through type solid rectangular abutments, Solid rectangular piers, detailed design of retaining walls, piles, wells.
- quantity estimation, preliminary design and drawings of superstructures
- preparation of revised GAD’s as required
- Scheme of widening of existing masonry arch bridges, design and drawings of retaining walls of different heights for Widening and Upgradatrion.
